Poupou (New Zealand)

Two carved house panels, carved with stylised figures, their eyes inlaid with haliotis shell.

They were carved by Hone Ngatoto, who died in 1927/28, the last of the carvers from the Iwiraku school of Maori carving, associated with the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

The poupou were brought from New Zealand to Britain for the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1867.
