The Smithy, Rait, about 1903

The view shows the Smithy, Rait. Two men stand outside with carts, agricultural implements in the yard, and washing lines.

The view shows the smithy yard just below the High Street. The buildings are pre-Improvement 18th century Fermtoun buildings but have relatively new tiled roofs instead of thatch. A burn runs through the centre of the village effectively cutting it in half. The buildings are situated alongside it. It would have been a useful water supply for the smithy.
