Balthayock Castle, Kinfauns

View of Balthayock Castle by Kinfauns, Perth - with ladies posed at the top of the steps and in the archway beneath.

This late 14th century tower stands north east of Kinfauns and has views along Glencarse. It is 3 storeys high with 3 metre thick walls. A straight mural stair links the ground floor to a vaulted hall above and a turnpike rises to the upper floor and wall walk. The side arch bears the initials of Alexander Blair and his wife and the date 1578. The Blairs of Balthayock were reputedly one of the most turbulent and lawless families in Scotland. In 1870 parts of the bigger complex were demolished and the tower itself was restored by James MacLaren.
