Murthly School

Schoolboys playing cricket at Murthly School, Perthshire, about 1904.  A group of girls standing by the fence are looking on.  Perhaps the dog is helping to field the ball.

There was a school at Murthly as early as  the 1600's.  By the beginning of the 20th century there may have been 80 to 90 pupils and as many as 3 teachers.  Then the numbers dropped significantly.  By 1945 there were less than 30 children on the school rolls.  Today there are around 50 pupils and 2 full time teachers.
