Portrait of a young woman in a summer bonnet

Bessie MacNicol was born in Glasgow in 1869 and attended Glasgow School of Art between 1887 and 1892. She later studied art in Paris at the Académie Colarossi and in 1893 she exhibited at the Royal Academy. After returning to Glasgow, she moved back into the family home. In 1896, she spent time in the artist’s colony in Kirkcudbright. While there, she painted the portrait of E. A. Hornel, whose influence can be seen in this painting, which may be a self-portrait.
