On the Rance

Charles Gray Kennaway was born in Perth in 1860, the son of Charles Gray Kennaway (a baker) and his wife Elizabeth Keiller (of the Dundee marmalade making family). Kennaway was educated at Perth Academy and later enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London where he studied for 7 years. He spent the summer of 1887 studying in Paris and later went on to become Art Master at Sharp’s Institution in Perth. In 1892, he was appointed Principal of the Athenaeum School in Glasgow, a post he held for the next 8 years. He and his Danish wife set up an artist’s colony at Dinan in the early 1900s and he exhibited widely at the major art exhibitions in the UK. In later life, he moved to Torquay and died on a holiday to visit family in Perth in 1925.
