Royal Perthshire Militia Sergeant's Uniform
Sergeant's uniform jacket of the Royal Perthshire Militia. Black collar, with cream binding, scarlet wool body and arms with cream strips. Black shoulders with diagonal cream bands, finished with sheep's wool. Three horizontal stripes indicating sergeant on right arm, Black cuffs with cream stripes and silver coloured buttons bearing the insigina of the Royal Perthshire Militia. This jacket has a black ribbon or 'flash' at the centre back neck which protected the coat from grease and flour on the wearer's pigtail. Sergeant James Wingate, the wearer, may have been a band sergeant or a sergeant in a flank company, either the Grenadier Company or the Light Company.
