chess piece (bishop)

Carved jet chess piece, rectangular in cross-section with chamfered edges, and tapering from a flat base towards a curved terminal with two small horns representing the peaks on abishop's mitre. Knife marks made during manufacture are visible just below the terminal, but apart from this the surfaces are smooth and the terminal itself is slightly worn, suggesting that the object had been quite frequently handled. lustrous black chess piece, a unique example from the Scottish archaeological record.
