17th century cavalryman's buff coat

A long coat of heavy buff leather designed to be worn by a cavalryman, about 1620 - 1700. The skirt is made of four panels which spread out comfortably when the wearer is on horseback, and there are rust marks inside the left front panel at the hem and waist. The rust marks inside the left panel suggest the presence of a sword worn under the coat. The coat protected its wearer from knocks and cuts and from the weather and covered him from the neck to the knee when he was mounted.
