Vase of Flowers

This small but vibrant study was given to Morris as a present from Fergusson in 1932. It was painted during his Paris years and shows the bright colour and sketchy brushwork typical of his Fauvist style.

Fergusson never tired of reworking the same basic elements in his compositions and this vase reappears in a number of his still lifes of the Paris years. Small studies like this, as well as his conte sketches, often provided helpful details for large scale compositions in oil.

This work was donated on 22 March 1993 by Jim Hastie, the Director of the Margaret Morris Movement, who was a dancer and also a close personal friend of Fergusson and Morris during the Glasgow years.
