Sheila (Head)

Sheila O'Shaunessy (b1915 nee Neill) was a friend of Fergusson and Morris during the Glasgow years. Fergusson painted a number of portraits of her (see also 1992.286). She was a graduate of Glasgow School of Art and became an active member of the New Art Club and New Scottish Group in the 1940's.

This small study in oil paint may have been based on sketches executed many years earlier, as was typical of Fergusson's working methods towards the end of his life. Despite spending a great deal of his time actively encouraging younger generations of artists, Fergusson still continued with his own work until he died.

On his death in 1961 Fergusson left the largest collection of his works in existence to his partner, Margaret Morris (1891-1980). In 1963 she established the JD Fergusson Art Foundation, who subsequently gifted the entire collection, archive and copyright to Perth and Kinross District Council in November 1991.
