Head and Foliage Carving

Fergusson made a number of wood carvings that relate closely to the theme of 'Dryads' that he explored in his paintings. This relief panel bears a close relationship to images such as 'The Branches' (1992.307). Tree-spirit connotations are emphasised by the branches that frame the face like hair. In 1944 Fergusson wrote an important essay titled, 'Art and Atavism: The Dryad'. In it he explained his views about tradition attributing his own love of trees to his Highland ancestry, extending back over many generations.
